Timed Assessment (Catwalk Look)

I am always in awe of the amazing looks Chanel manage to create time after time for their runway shows. Though they're usually quite avant garde, I wanted to design and create a more stripped back, wearable version of a Chanel catwalk look for my timed assessment. For peace of mind, I didn't want to create a look too risque considering the time restraint and the pressures of assessment conditions. I did,  of course, include the essence of Chanel runway makeup in my designs.

For my timed assessment, I chose to create a catwalk look for my brand, Chanel. Though a lot of the Chanel catwalk looks are avant garde, I wanted to create a look a little more wearable in preparation for the rest of my looks.

When looking for inspiration from Chanel campaigns, I noticed that the makeup usually pairs a strong lip with a subtle eye or vice versa. The looks always include immaculate, healthy skin with pristine and precise application. For the look I create, I am interested in pairing a smokey eye with a soft taupe lip.

For the hairstyles, I want to, again, create a style in keeping with the tone of Chanel. The majority of the hair and makeup adverts present their model with an up hairstyle. I am looking to create a  minimal and mature hairstyle with a messy edge to it. I complied some images below of inspirational hairstyles.

For the hairstyle of this look I am going to create a rough french pleat with a sweeping fringe and fly aways.

For the makeup, I am going to create a healthy glowing skin with smudgy black eye shadow and matte taupe lip.
Products used:
- Illamasqua Satin Primer
- Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
- Rimmel London 'Wake Me Up' Concealer
- Benefit Hollywood Glow
- Illamasqua Blush
- Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze and Glow palette
- Armani Eye and Brow Maestro
- Naked 3 palette
- Makeup Revolution palette
- Maybelline Gel Eyeliner
- Maybelline Mascara
- MAC lipsticks Taupe and Retro
- Illamasqua Loose Powder

For the hairstyle, a messy french pleat, hair volumised and textured by curling. Sweeping fringe, loose strands.

Here are the outcome images from the timed assessment/ my catwalk look. I dressed my model in a simple black evening dress with a heavy silver embellished neck line. The makeup definitely suits my model though I wish I'd have enhanced the smudgy black eyeshadow and possibly used false lashes for more definition. I am glad the warm tones work well with my model's complexion, especially the lip colour which was a blend of two lipsticks.
The hairstyle was trickier to create than I thought it'd be. I knew my model's hair was short but I knew they style was still  achievable. It was just fiddily and time consuming to get the hair into position and to secure the shorter strands of hair.

Chanel: Catwalk Makeup

Chanel have housed some of the most memorable catwalk looks. They are always innovative and original, cleverly complimenting the outfits worn on the runway. A variety of mediums often play a part in the looks of Chanel, from metallic paints to sequins and lace. The makeup artists of Chanel push the boundaries of colour, shape and texture to produce wonderful formations of art like the several I have included below.

Final Look: Evening

My evening look, created on Maddison, is a soft smokey pink eye coupled with a deep berry matte lip. This look was inspired by one of the lipsticks in the Chanel S/S 2015 makeup collection. As I wasn't using it in my spring summer look, I decided to honour the lovely tone in this look. I love how the photography captures the neat angle of the eyeshadow and the great pigment of the lipstick. I feel the lop application could have been altered slightly to look more symmetrical. Also, in the close up shots, you can see where the false eyelashes have been applied which somewhat negates their use.
For the lipstick, I used MAC Diva and the eyeshadow was created using a combination of colours from Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. I filled in Maddison's brows using Giorgio Armani Eye & Brown Maestro and contoured using the NYX matte bronzer. To achieve her lovely flawless base, I used foundation from Kryolan and Rimmel London concealer. My model's long loose curls was achieved using heated curling tongs and securing with hairspray. I actually straightened her hair first to have it smooth and straight nearer the root.

Evening Look: Moodboards & Designs

For my timed assessment, I have chosen to create a Chanel evening look. Evening makeup is generally defined as more dramatic makeup, using bolder colours than a day look. A day makeup may only include essential products whereas an evening look suggests a full face.

I want to create a look that is subtle and sophisticated and in keeping with the class and poise of the brand, Chanel. Below is a compilation of images that have inspired me whilst researching evening makeup.

These two moodboards depict the hair and makeup I envision when I think of a glamorous, evening look for Chanel. The makeup is inspired by one of the S/S 2015 makeup collection looks that I researched for my Chanel inspired Spring/Summer look.

For the first design, I went for a deep red lip.  The cheeks are heavily contoured and the eyes are smudgy black. The accompanying hairstyle is 40s inspired waves created by brushing through finger waves.
The second designs I went for a dark matte lip, in a purply, brown tone. This is coupled with fine winged liner and a smokey pink eye. The hair is full, loose curls, the hair is smooth and straight on top and then a mess of curls at the bottom.

Final Look: High Summer

One of my favourite shoots; I loved creating this high summer/beach look on Ellie. She looks so healthy and bronzed, the exact look I was hoping for. I am really pleased with the highlight I managed to create on her cheekbones, really defining her bone structure. I used the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze  & Glow palette to achieve this which worked perfectly on her skintone. I chose, last minute, to add a little gloss to her lips to give a healthy, hydrating finish. The curls in Ellie's hair are a little tighter than detailed in my hair design however they still suit the look.

This YouTube video shows me making up Ellie for the shoot...

High Summer Look: Moodboards & Designs

For my Chanel inspired High Summer Look, I am inspired by bronze glows and tussled hair. I am basing this around the very popular Chanel bronzer, Soleil de Tan which is a cream- gel medium with a silky glowing finish. Below are the two moodboards I have created for my look, the first depicting hairstyles and the second makeup.

From these moodboards, I find it is very clear the type of look I want to achieve. Below are the makeup and hair designs I have created for this look. I want to achieve a very bronzed complexion that is also reflective, like sunlight hitting the skin. The eyes will have smokey brown eyeshadow and luscious full lashes. For the lip, I have drawn up two finishes, one is a matte brown and the other a more golden hue of the natural lip colour. For my final outcome I will most likely opt for the more natural tone so not to be too heavy on the brown colour palette.
For the hairstyle of this look, I want to create loose flowing hair. For my first design, I played around with the idea of wet look hair, using the method of scrunching the hair as well as applying gel for a shiny, fresh from the water, finish. Though this hairstyle would best represent a model on the beach, in the height of summer, I don't feel it carries any familiarity with Chanel. I therefore adapted my second design plan with Chanel in mind, and settled on big soft curls achieved with large barrelled curling tongs. I intend to create volume at the roots of the hair by backcombing and teasing the curls at the ends to create a greater mass of hair.

Final Look: Skincare

These are the final images from my skincare photo shoot. This was a very easy shoot to create, especially after trialling it previously on the same model. The whole vibe of this look was very earthy and healthy. Unlike my trail, I decided to let my model's hair down as it nicely frames the face. I wound up using photoshop to make my model's skin as flawless as possible as the texture on the un-retouched shots was distracting and wouldn't be found in a skincare advert.
